MUS100-Johnston test #1 study sheet
[Note: The first 10-point quiz covers up to chapter 6 (fundamentals), plus the assigned readings on Music for Premies and the Mozart Effect.]
Test #1 is 100 points, multiple choice and true/false, with 5 listening examples.
Reading: Chapters 1-11 including the terms at end of each chapter.
The tests are multiple choice and true/false except for the listening which is matching. For the most part, I will take the questions from the McGraw-Hill test study questions found on <http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073401420/student_view0/chapter1/multiple_choice_quiz.html>. For each chapter, use the pull-down menu to select the chapter, then click on Multiple Choice Quiz.

Musical examples are listed in your book. Be careful not to confuse "example" numbers with "CD track" numbers. A single example may take several track numbers. To identify what you hear, you will choose from the following lists.
Class rule: Remember that for the periods, we only answer from the periods we are currently studying. For for Test #1 those would be Middle Ages (Medieval) and Renaissance ONLY.
Below you will find the actual listening test! I will play 5 pieces, a minute from each piece (could be the center or end of the piece). Then you will identify the pieces giving the title, composer, and period for each.
Titles: a. Sumer is Icumen In b. Queen Elisabeth's Galliard c. As Vesta Was from Latmos Hill Descending d. Kyrie from the mass "Cum Jubile" e. "Gloria" from the Missa Notre Dame a. I suggest that you first read the text carefully, paying attention to each heading and the terms. Do the listing as you meet the pieces in the text.
Above you see the actual listening test. Study those pieces - listen and learn the name, composer's name, and period of each piece. ONLY PIECES FROM THE PERIODS WE ARE CURRENTLY STUDYING WILL BE ON EACH TEST! For for Test #1 those would be Middle Ages (Medieval) and Renaissance ONLY. Use 3"x5" cards, putting the name of a piece on one side, and the composer and period on the other. Memorize this part.
Then click on the McGraw-Hill test bank and try to answer the test questions for each chapter. The tests will all be multiple choice / true-false, and will come from those questions!
Do a little each day and try to get yourself into a routine.
Good luck!
